Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. (John 15:4-5, NASB)
Jesus calls us to abide, to remain in Him. This is the way to LIFE, to fruitfulness, to seeing God’s goodness grow in our own lives, in our husband’s and kids’ and neighbors’ lives, to see His goodness, His Kingdom come in our neighborhoods and churches and cities…
Jesus calls us to abide. To remain. To stay. To live in His love.
And now we get to my BIG QUESTION, which I’ve been asking for years, and veeeerrrrryyyy slowly finding answers to…
The Message translates this invitation “Make your home in me just as I do in you…”
I love the picture of a “home” in God, that wherever we go, we are HOME.
For me, home means: Safe, loved, welcomed, there’s a place for me. I think that is the promise of the Trinity – that we’re welcomed home, into family with the Father-Son-Spirit.
I don’t know about y’all…but I have spiritual amnesia. I so easily forget this invitation to remain connected. I quickly revert to living life as if I’m unloved, as if God is untrustworthy, as if I’m on my own. I forget that I live in His presence and He is always with me. I forget to make myself at home in His love.
When our Bible study group going through “The Call of Jesus,” got to the call to “Abide in Me”, I prayed and brainstormed ways to practice making this choice to trust, to live loved, to remain and make our home in God’s love. I came up with a list of verses about God’s love, which we used to do a “truth immersion”.
If you’d like to try this truth immersion, you can use the picture above, or download and it from PDF here if that is easier for you.
Truth Immersion: Making Yourself At Home in God’s Love
Choose a verse from the picture/PDF each day this week to meditate on and spend the day with. Begin each day reading your verse out loud, then writing it down with your name in it:
“Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow RENEE all the days of her life, and she will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
After speaking this truth over yourself, sit in SILENCE for a few minutes, just receiving God’s love. Notice what rises up, what makes you uncomfortable, and let it go. Remind yourself of your truth for the day and return to a place of being LOVED. You’re not doing anything for God, you’re receiving His love.
And as you hit stresses and hard things in the day, remind yourself again… “Surely goodness and lovingkindness are following me, Renee Meyer, THIS DAY, and I WILL dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
You can move on to a different verse the next day…or you might find you need to camp out and stay on one truth until you begin to feel its truths deep down into your bones.
I think as we dwell on His love for us, we’ll find His love bearing fruit in our lives. Because whether we feel it or not…we are at home in His love.
This summer I’m sharing some of my own lessons and thoughts from a Bible study I wrote with my friend Stacey and did with a group of (amazing) women last Fall. This 8 week study, The Call of Jesus, is available for free here or by clicking the “Free Bible Studies and Resources” link in my blog header. If you’re looking for a Bible study to do yourself or with friends this Fall, check it out!
