Now seems like a great time to revisit “DO NOT FEAR.”

So much in our lives tempts us to look at obstacles, at our lack, at the things we fear. And God invites us to look to Him, to look to love. How do you fight fear with the knowledge of God's love?

Considering that March 2020 was 2 years long, it’s not surprising that Spring 2018 seems like a million years ago. At the time, I was in the middle of a long, hard season, facing a lot of unknowns.  I survived that season in part by taking a long, hard look at the Bible’s most repeated command: Do Not Fear.

I took everything I learned from that study and turned it into a devotional. I thought now might be a great time to offer that again, as now we’re all in a place with lots of unknowns.

Looking for Love in all the {RIGHT} Places

Happy first day of February!

LOVE is in the AIR!

I want to spend some time in this, the month of love, looking away from the Hollywood version of love, love that can be summed up in chocolate candy hearts and over-priced red roses.

When I was in college and a brand new believer I had a poster of 1 Corinthians 13 (now that I think about it, it might have been my first Christian-ese, Family Christian Stores type purchase?) I loved that thing, but after a while I came to see 1 Corinthians 13 as kind of trite, commonly chosen as a reading for weddings by people who may or my not have known anything about Jesus. In other words, I got snotty and decided I was too advanced for Paul’s words about love in 1 Corinthians 13.

I have repented and returned to this beautiful description of love in the years since those young & prideful days. But I’ve never studied them in depth, I’ve never worked my way slowly through it. So this February, that’s what I’m doing.

Each day of the devotional focuses on one aspect of love from 1 Corinthians 13. Most days include other verses on that topic, and some have a few thoughts from me. Every day there are a series of questions to think about and some practices to try, in order to RECEIVE love from God and OFFER love to others.

The content is appropriate for men or women, married or single, happy or sad in your love life. I am a sucker for romance, and I love love – but the point of this devotional is to think about real love, not romantic love, or the Hollywood version of love. I think you’ll enjoy it, wherever your love life finds you in this present moment.

The cover art is pretty & feminine, because I love these particular graphics & have been wanting to use them, and because LOVE. I know this  devotional will be read by men as well as women, and I don’t want to scare the fellas away with all the flowers. I thought about using something less feminine…but really there are not a lot of love-related graphics that aren’t floral or overtly valentinesy. And then I remembered that women read and study books with masculine covers all the time, and we can handle it. I’m sure our gentlemen friends can handle the reverse.

New Resource Available: The Call of Jesus (an 8 week study on the commands of Jesus in the Gospels)

As I mentioned here, this summer I’ve been working on getting some of the Bible study curriculum I’ve written for my local church and college ministry formatted and share-able so that I can make it available for others to use.

Free Bible Study Goodness

Popping in with a little bloggy business for you today. I wanted you to notice I have a new link up there ^^^ on my blog menu. See that? Where it says FREE BIBLE STUDIES AND RESOURCES?

Why yes.

I’ve been writing Bible studies for over 10 years for my local church, through my role in the college ministry and women’s ministry. It is one of the joys of my chosen vocation.

And it is a never ending delight to my heart to get my studies into the hands of other churches and ministries. I’ve been asked for copies many times over the years, to be used by churches and groups in other towns, states, and even around the world. It makes me so happy!

 

One of the projects I am working on this summer is getting everything I’ve written ready to share here on the blog, so they will be more easily accessible. (Up until now, people have to email me and ask, then I send them a PDF of what I used, with all the dates and information from when I taught the study – so I’m cleaning all that up!)

Right now, there’s just one study on there and ready to be downloaded (free!): a 12 week study on the Sermon on the Mount, which has been one of the most impacting and challenging studies I’ve ever participated in. I’ve done it with a group of 20 or so college students, adapted it for all 200 in our college small group Bible study, and taught it as part of a Bible study with 40 women through our Tuesday morning Bible study. It is good stuff, if for sure the hardest Bible study for me to write (not because it is hard to understand, but it is super challenging to live.)

Living on the Rock: Finding Security in an Insecure World (A 12 week Bible study on the character of God, focused on moving beyond just knowing the truth to applying and living in it day by day.)

The Call of Jesus: Making Room to Hear and Respond to Jesus In Our Busy Lives (An 8 week Bible study organized around different invitations Jesus made: Follow Me, Come to Me, Abide in Me, and more.)

Teach Us to Pray (An 8 week study of the Lord’s Prayer. In this topical study, each week focuses on one phrase of the prayer Jesus taught His disciples to pray.)

I got out my calligraphy pens yesterday to make something to add to a graduation gift. Since I had everything out, I decided to make a little something for myself as well.

I’ve been reading and thinking about community and the values that lead to Jesus-honoring, life giving relationships, values that reflect God’s Shalom Kingdom. This is who I want to be as a Christ follower.
